To align with Cisco Talos' Intelligence Categories, Umbrella is updating and migrating its content categories. The descriptions and definitions listed here for Umbrella's legacy pre Talos-based content categories. Levels of Categorization
When adding a policy and determining which categories of content to block, there are several levels of categorization to choose from:ย High, Moderate, Low, and Custom. Categories included in the High, Moderate, and Low levels are predetermined and cannot be changed. Custom includes all levelsโHigh, Moderate, and Lowโas well as categories unique to Custom. With Custom, you can select categories and create your own custom list of categories to block.ย ย

High, Moderate, and Low Category Levels
HighโBlocks adult-related status, illegal activity, social networking, video sharing site, and general time-wasters. Includes all Moderate and Low content categories. Note that not all content categories are listed under High. There is a sub-listing of content categories that are only available to Custom.
ModerateโBlocks all adult-related websites and illegal activity.
LowโBlocks pornography and anonymous web surfing.
CustomโFor the creation of a custom grouping. Lists all content categories.
The High, Moderate, and Low levels propagate upward. Low categories are included with Moderate and both Moderate and Low category presets are included in High.ย

Content Categories Definitions
- Academic FraudโSites that promote educational fraud, including but not limited to plagiarism and cheating.
- Adult ThemesโSites that are adult in nature and are not defined in other rating categories.
Note: Select this category only if you want to be very restrictive on your network. - AdwareโSites that distribute applications that display advertisements without the user's knowledge or choice. It does NOT include sites that serve to advertise.
- AlcoholโSites about alcohol use, commercial and otherwise.
- Anime/Manga/WebcomicโSites that host online comics, cartoons, and graphic novels.
- ArtsโGalleries and exhibitions; artists and art; photography; literature and books; performing arts and theater; musicals; ballet; museums; design; architecture. Cinema and television are classified as Entertainment.
- AstrologyโAstrology; horoscope; fortune-telling; numerology; psychic advice; tarot.
- AuctionsโSites for buying and selling via auction.
- AutomotiveโSites about automobiles, including manufacturers, news, reviews, and hobbyist information.
- BlogsโSites that are personal or group journals, diaries or publications.
- Business ServicesโSites for corporations and businesses of all sizes, especially company websites.
- ChatโSites where you can chat in real-time with groups of people. Includes IRC and video chat sites.
- ClassifiedsโSites for buying and selling (or bartering) goods and services. Includes sites with real estate and housing listings.
- Computer SecurityโOffering security products and services for corporate and home users.
- DatingโSites for meeting other people.
- Digital PostcardsโDating, online personals, matrimonial agencies.
- Dining and DrinkingโEating and drinking establishments; restaurants, bars, taverns, and pubs; restaurant guides and reviews.
- DIY ProjectsโGuidance and information to create, improve, modify, decorate and repair something without the aid of experts or professionals.
- DrugsโSites about illegal or recreational drug use.
- Dynamic and ResidentialโIP addresses of broadband links that usually indicate users attempting to access their home network, for example for a remote session to a home computer.
- Ecommerce/ShoppingโSites that are online stores for products and services.
- Educational InstitutionsโSites for schools, covering all age levels and types.
- FashionโClothing and fashion; hair salons; cosmetics; accessories; jewelry; perfume; pictures and text relating to body modification; tattoos and piercing; modeling agencies. Dermatological products are classified as Health and Nutrition.
- File StorageโSites that offer space for hosting, sharing and backup of digital files.
- File Transfer ServicesโFile transfer services with the primary purpose of providing download services and hosted file sharing.
- Financial InstitutionsโSites for banks, brokerages, trusts, and other financial organizations.
- Forums/Message BoardsโSites with discussions, including bulletin boards, message boards, and forums.
- Freeware and SharewareโProviding downloads of free and shareware software.
- GamblingโSites that offer gambling or information about gambling.
- GamesโSites that offer gameplay and information about games (news, tips, cheat codes).
- German Youth ProtectionโContent deemed harmful to minors. This category helps prevent viewing of youth-endangering content in Germany. Block pages for this category will include German text. This list is not controlled by Umbrella and is created to be controlled by the BPjM (Federal Review Board for Media Harmful to Minors) to be compliant with German Law. - HackingโDiscussing ways to bypass the security of websites, software, and computers.
- Hate/DiscriminationโSites that promote intolerance based on gender, age, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation or other group identities.
- Health and FitnessโSites that offer information about health care and health services. Includes fitness related sites and information about health and fitness.
- HumorโSites that are intended to be funny or humorous.
- HuntingโProfessional or sports hunting, gun clubs, and other hunting-related sites.
- Illegal ActivitiesโPromoting crime, such as stealing, fraud, illegally accessing telephone networks; computer viruses; terrorism, bombs, and anarchy; websites depicting murder and suicide as well as explaining ways to commit them.
- Illegal DownloadsโProviding the ability to download software or other materials, serial numbers, key generators, and tools for bypassing software protection in violation of copyright agreements. Torrents are classified as Peer File Transfer.
- InfrastructureโContent delivery infrastructure and dynamically generated content; websites that cannot be classified more specifically because they are secured or otherwise difficult to classify.
- Instant MessagingโSites that offer access or software to communicate in real-time with other individuals.
- Internet TelephonyโTelephonic services using the internet.
- Child Abuse Content (CAC)โSites that contain child sexual abuse content. For more information about this category, see the Internet Watch Foundation.
- IT-ADMโSites that offer gambling or information about gambling and tobacco. For more information, see the Italian Nacional Agency.
- IT-AGCOMโSites that are deemed to infringe on intellectual property. For more information, see the Italian National Agency.
- Jobs/EmploymentโSites that offer job listings, resume services, interview coaching, and similar employment-related services.
- Lingerie/BikiniโSites displaying or dedicated to lingerie/bikini that could be considered adult-only.
- LotteriesโSweepstakes, contests, and state-sponsored lotteries.
- MilitaryโMilitary, such as the armed forces, military bases, military organizations, anti-terrorism.
- Mobile PhonesโShort Message Services (SMS); ringtones and mobile phone downloads. Cellular carrier websites are included in the Business and Industry category.
- MoviesโSites that promote movies or offer movie watching online.
- MusicโSites about music, including news, band and fan information.
- NatureโNatural resources; ecology and conservation; forests; wilderness; plants; flowers; forest conservation; forest, wilderness, and forestry practices; forest management (reforestation, forest protection, conservation, harvesting, forest health, thinning, and prescribed burning); agricultural practices (agriculture, gardening, horticulture, landscaping, planting, weed control, irrigation, pruning, and harvesting); pollution issues (air quality, hazardous waste, pollution prevention, recycling, waste management, water quality, and the environmental cleanup industry); animals, pets, livestock, and zoology; biology; botany.
- News/MediaโSites that offer news and information, including newspapers, broadcasters, and other publishers.
- Non-ProfitsโSites for non-profit or charity organizations and services.
- NudityโSites that provide images or representations of nudity.
- Online MeetingsโOnline meetings, desktop sharing, remote access, and other tools that facilitate multi-location collaboration.
- Online TradingโOnline brokerages; websites that enable the user to trade stocks online; information relating to the stock market, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, brokers, stock analysis and commentary, stock screens, stock charts, IPOs, stock splits. Services for spread betting on stocks and shares are classified as Gambling. Other financial services are classified as Finance.
- Organization EmailโWebsites used to access business email (often via Outlook Web Access).
- P2P/File SharingโSites that facilitate the sharing of digital files between individuals, especially through peer-to-peer software, including torrent sites.
- ParanormalโUFOs, ghosts, cryptid, telekinesis, urban legends, and myths.
- Parked DomainsโSites that are placeholders "parked" for future use. Current uses may include single-page advertising sites.
- Personal SitesโWebsites about and from private individuals; personal homepage servers; websites with personal contents; personal blogs with no particular theme.
- Personal VPNโVirtual private network (VPN) sites or tools that are typically for personal use and may or may not be approved for corporate usage.
- Photo SharingโSites for sharing photographs, as individual images, galleries, and albums.
- PodcastsโSites that offer podcasts, digital media files distributed over the Internet, often using syndication feeds, for playback on portable media players and personal computers. Both audio and video podcasts are included.
- PoliticsโSites about politics, politicians, political parties and organizations. Government sites are separate.
- PornographyโAnything relating to pornography, including mild depiction, soft pornography or hard-core pornography.
- PortalsโSites that offer gateways to the internet as a whole, often including bundled services on their own site.
- Professional NetworkingโSocial networking for the purpose of career or professional development. See also Social Networking.
- Proxy/AnonymizerโSites providing proxy bypass information or services. Blocks DoH providers so that the browser fails to resolve the hostname of the DoH server, and reverts to standard system DNS. Also, sites that allow the user to surf the net anonymously, including sites that allow the user to send anonymous emails.
- RadioโSites that offer online radio listening or promote radio stations.
- Real EstateโInformation that would support the search for real estate; office and commercial space; real estate listings, such as rentals, apartments, and homes; house building.
- ReligiousโSites about religion, religious teachings and groups, and spirituality.
- Research/ReferenceโSites such as encyclopedias, dictionaries as well as other research-related resources.
- SaaS and B2BโWeb portals for online business services; online meetings.
- Safe for KidsโDirected at, and specifically for, young children.
- Search EnginesโSites that offer result listings based on keywords.
- Sex EducationโFactual websites dealing with sex; sexual health; contraception; pregnancy.
- SexualityโSites that provide information, images or implications of bondage, sadism, masochism, fetish, beating, body piercing or self-mutilation. This category is not intended for LGBT-related sites that do not fall under the aforementioned criteria.
- Science and TechnologyโScience and technology, such as aerospace, electronics, engineering, mathematics, and other similar subjects; space exploration; meteorology; geography; environment; energy (fossil, nuclear, renewable); communications (telephones, telecommunications).
- Social NetworkingโSites that promote interaction and networking between people.
- Social ScienceโSciences and history related to society; archaeology; anthropology; cultural studies; history; linguistics; geography; philosophy; psychology; women's studies.
- Society and CultureโFamily and relationships; ethnicity; social organizations; genealogy; seniors; child-care.
- Software/TechnologyโSites about computing, hardware, and technology, including news, information, code and vendor information.
- Software UpdatesโWebsites that host updates for software packages.
- SportsโSites about sports of all kinds, from professional to amateur, from news to league information and schedules. Includes martial arts and MMA related sites.
- TastelessโSites that contain information on such subjects as mutilation, torture, horror, or the grotesque. Includes Pro-Anorexia and Pro-Suicide related sites.
- TelevisionโSites that promote television shows or offer television watching online.
- TerrorismโSites that promote terrorism or are linked with terrorist organizations.
- TobaccoโSites about tobacco use and related products, commercial and otherwise.
- TravelโSites with travel information and services, including reservations for airlines, cars, hotels, vacations, and trips.
- URL ShortenerโAn online application or service that converts a regular URL into a condensed format.
- Video SharingโSites for sharing video content.
- Visual Search EnginesโSites for searching for images based on keywords.
- WeaponsโSites about weapons, commercial and otherwise.
- Web Page TranslationโTranslation of web pages between languages.
- Web HostingโWebsite hosting; bandwidth services.
- Web SpamโRedirect targets containing unwanted sweepstakes/survey/advertisements for free merchandise, pharmaceutical spam or rolex distributions.
- WebmailโSites that offer the ability to send or receive an email.
