Deploy Umbrella's PAC File for Windows

Umbrella's secure web gateway requires that you deploy a proxy auto-config (PAC) file URL so that your browser is able to successfully reach destinations. If you're behind a firewall, you may also need to deploy Umbrella's PAC file to configure the browser so that it points to the correct proxy server.

Umbrella copies internal domains configured in the Umbrella dashboard (Deployments > Configuration > Domain Management) to the PAC file so that these internal domains are not sent to the proxy.

Note: Umbrella limits PAC file downloads and usage to roaming computers on fixed networks. You must register your fixed networks with Umbrella. When roaming computers are located off the protected network or you use other connection mechanisms, Umbrella does not support PAC files.

What is a PAC file?

A proxy auto-config (PAC) file defines the proxy server that a browser must use to fetch a URL.

Note: A PAC file is only used with the Umbrella secure web gateway and is only available for the Web policy.

Deploy Umbrella PAC File URL for Chrome and Edge Browsers

1. Navigate to Policies > Management > Web Policy and click Add or expand an existing ruleset.

2. Under Ruleset Settings, for PAC File, copy the PAC file URL.

3. In Windows, navigate to Start > Network Connection > Proxy.

4. In the Automatic proxy setup section, set Use Setup Script to On.
5. In the Script Address field, paste the PAC file URL copied from Umbrella in Step 2.

6. Click Save.

Deploy Umbrella PAC File URL for Firefox

1. Navigate to Policies > Management > Web Policy and click Add or expand an existing ruleset.

2. Under Ruleset Settings, for PAC File, copy the PAC file URL.

3. In Firefox, navigate to Settings, scroll to Network Settings, and then click Settings.

4. Select Automatic Proxy Configuration URL and paste the PAC file URL copied from Umbrella in Step 2.

5. Click OK.
