Q: Can the Cisco Umbrella Chromebook and SWG Umbrella Chromebook clients work together?
A: Yes, these two clients can co-exist and Umbrella's protections still function as expected. However, note that due to limitations of Google APIs and the deprecation of Chrome apps, there can be small yet insignificant impact to the page load times. We suggest that you do not install both clients. For optimal performance, we suggest that you only deploy the SWG Chromebook client and add the resulting Chromebook identities to the Web policy. Q: Do the DNS Umbrella Chromebook and SWG Umbrella Chromebook clients work in the Chrome browser for Windows or macOS?
A: No, these clients are designed specifically for Chrome OS and do not function with other operating systems.
Q: Do I need the Google Admin console to install the Umbrella DNS and SWG Chromebook clients?
A: Yes, you must install the Umbrella DNS and SWG Chromebook clients from the Google Admin console and upload your Umbrella organization specific JSON file from it, too. Note that extensions are unlisted on the Chrome store and manual installation on chrome browser will break functionality.
Q: Do these clients proxy internet traffic?
A: No, the DNS Umbrella Chromebook client does not proxy traffic. It only provides DNS layer security by sending DNS queries to Umbrella Resolvers. Yes, the SWG Umbrella Chromebook client proxies traffic.
Q: Is the intelligent proxy supported by the DNS Umbrella Chromebook client?
A: No, the intelligent proxy is not supported.
Q: Is SafeSearch supported?
A: No, SafeSearch is not supported.

A: To confirm that a user is protected by the DNS Umbrella Chromebook or SWG Umbrella Chromebook client, navigate to www.internetbadguys.com

Q: Can I use welcome.opendns.com
to confirm that either the DNS Umbrella Chromebook or SWG Umbrella client is working?
A: No. welcome.opendns.com
is not currently supported.
Q: How are the DNS Umbrella Chromebook and SWG Umbrella clients updated?
A: Google is responsible for updating the software in Chromebooks. When Cisco updates the Umbrella Chromebook clients in the Chrome Web Store, the upgrade is automatically pushed by Google. This process can take several hours.
Q: What is trusted network detection?
A: Trusted network detection enables the Cisco Umbrella Chromebook client for Umbrella virtual appliances (VAs). In a situation where a network can be trusted because it is protected by VAs (for example, in an on-premise network), a Chromebook-specific policy can take precedence over the existing network policy. For more information, see Enable Trusted Network Detection.
Note: The SWG Umbrella Chromebook client does not support VAs.
Q: Are public profiles supported?
A: Yes, managed guest session or public session is supported for the Cisco Umbrella Chromebook client.
